The FBI on Friday received 203,086 requests for instant gun background checks, which would mark nearly a 10 percent increase from 2016 and sets a new record for the most ever in one day, USA Today reported.
Alarmingly, the latest figure does not necessarily represent the amount of guns sold, which could be HIGHER as buyers can purchase more than one firearm per check.
According to CNN, firearms dealers were hoping that rebates and deep discounts would bring in customers on Black Friday and boost recently flagging sales.
The FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) received 203,086 requests for background checks this past Friday alone, as Black Friday shoppers rushed to snap up firearms amid a flurry of deals. Two of the largest gun manufacturers, Remington Arms Company and Browning Arms Company, reportedly offered cash rebates of up to $200 on shotguns and $100 on rifles this year.
And even though gun sales were down during the first year of the Trump administration, gun sales tend to increase following mass shootings.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions last week ordered a review of the FBI's background check system after a gunman led a carnage in a small southern Texas church, killing 26 people with multiple firearms purchased in spite of previous convictions.
Black Friday was also well timed for gunmakers like Ruger, which had reported that sales slowed this year after an unusually strong pre-election season in 2016. "Companies that are more anxious about making money than the safety of the public or law enforcement officials sworn to protect them shouldn't be given a platform to sell their products".
It is a popular time of year to buy guns.
