For the current season, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are projecting viruses H1N1, H3N2, B/Victoria lineage and a second potential lineage of B viruses.

Early in Alberta's flu season, three people have died and 90 have been admitted to hospital with influenza.

A "super" flu vaccine is being considered to protect vulnerable Australians in the wake of the country's worst flu season on record.

Influenza expert and chair of the Immunisation Coalition Professor Paul Van Buynder said stronger "super" vaccines were available overseas but because of licensing issues and the purchasing process they could not be accessed here. But "we never know when that's going to change", he said.

Flu shots started being administered at clinics, doctor's offices, pharmacies, and workplaces last month. Some employers also offer vaccination programs.

The state's Stop Flu at School program also kicked off Wednesday and will bring scheduled vaccination clinics to students at 167 public schools statewide through December 21.
