Intel And AMD Join Forces To Develop A New Laptop Chip

The chip would be powerful enough to run high-end video games on a thin and lightweight notebook PC, they said. As for Intel and AMD, the chip gives the two firms a potential leg up over chunkier laptops that pack NVIDIA discrete graphics. But they can not deliver the power needed to run games with much gusto, so Intel's mobile chips are often paired with Nvidia GPUs in laptops.

Longtime rivals Intel and AMD said they are pairing up to help enthusiast laptops become thinner, lighter and "deliver a premium experience" with a new chip that includes technology from both companies. It will be very interesting to see how Intel's new Core H CPUs perform, particularly up against AMD's new Ryzen Mobile processors, which includes Vega Integrated Graphics.

The gaming segment is one of the bright spots in the otherwise boring and declining PC market, and this is where the Intel-AMD partnership will make the greatest impact.

The partnership between AMD and Intel looks to break this trend, while allowing for gaming laptops to be ultrabook thin; so far only the Razer Blade can be seen as a slim gaming laptop.

In this case, Intel says it will opt for combining one of its eighth-generation Core H-series processors with a semi-custom graphics chip from AMD.

According to AMD this is not a licensing deal and there has been no transfer or license of IP to Intel.

"Our collaboration with Intel expands the installed base for AMD Radeon GPUs and brings to market a differentiated solution for high-performance graphics", AMD vice president Scott Herkelman said in a statement.

The solution will also be the first mobile PC to use HBM2, consuming less power and taking up less space than traditional discrete graphics-based designs.

The power sharing framework is a connection among the processor, graphics chip, and graphics memory, with software drivers and interfaces in the semi-custom discrete GPU that coordinates information among all three elements. "This new semi-custom GPU puts the performance and capabilities of Radeon graphics into the hands of an expanded set of enthusiasts who want the best visual experience possible". At the heart of the design is an embedded multi-die interconnect bridge (EMIB), a small intelligent bridge that allows heterogeneous silicon to quickly pass information in close proximity. And while it may not directly compete from a graphics standpoint, Intel is still facing potentially stiff competition from NVIDIA in the machine learning space.

The new AMD-Intel product will enable sleeker, thinner devices for high-performance computing applications, such as gaming.
