Aside from starring, Aniston and Witherspoon will executive produce and co-own the show with Michael Ellenberg's Media Res production company. Apple has always been involved in the entertainment industry from the outside.

In the meantime, the company has always been making noise about producing its own content on the movie and TV side. Incidentally, Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg - two seasoned TV executives that Apple brought on board earlier this year - reportedly have a $1 billion budget to be used for developing and acquiring original content. Now, we have word of its first major project. It is one of the first two original scripted series at Apple, along with Amazing Stories, a reimagining the anthology from Steven Spielberg and Bryan Fuller, which has closed a deal for a straight-to-series order.

Brian Stelter, CNN host and "Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV" author, will serve as a consultant on the show.

News of the series broke in late July, when it hadn't yet been shopped around to networks.

Apple has picked up Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston's TV drama for two seasons to stream in 2018, it announced on Wednesday.

In addition to reuniting Witherspoon and Aniston (Recode resident "Friends" expert Johana Bhuiyan reminds me that Witherspoon guest-starred as Aniston's sister on that show), the show is important because it illustrates Apple's focus on landing Very Big Names as it prepares to dive deeply into the TV business.

If it's not already abundantly clear, the project still has a long way to go before it is completed and then you are watching it. The Hollywood Reporter put it this way: "as for how racy it will be, that's still to be determined".

Apple has not announced a time frame for release for the new series, but stay tuned to Screen Rant for more information.
