Two gunmen attacked a Coptic church on the site, killing at least seven people and injuring five.

The UK Guardian cites Egyptian media sources that say at least one attacker was able to flee the scene, while another was overpowered and restrained by police and bystanders.

Friday's attack took place as Egyptian Coptic Christians, who make up 10 percent of the country's 93 million population, brace to celebrate their Christmas on 7 January. Isis also claimed responsibility last week for firing an anti-tank missile at a helicopter at an airport in northern Sinai as the defence and interior ministers were visiting. At least two people were reportedly killed in that attack.

Trump condemned the attack and said the United States will stand with Egypt against terrorism as it did in the past.

The Times notes another incident was reported on Friday involving a gun attack in Helwan at an appliance shop owned by a Copt.

Health ministry spokesman Khaled Megahed told state television that the gunman who was shot dead had killed nine people and wounded others, including a police officer.

No group immediately claims responsibility for the attack, the fourth to target Christians since December of the previous year, but it bears the hallmarks of the Islamic State group's local affiliate.

The second assailtant was captured soon after, Reuters reported. The officials stated that a gunman fired upon people outside the church.
