Chris Stapleton, Little Big Town Top Country Grammy Nominations

Often, they'll reward sales over talent, popularity over quality.

Jay-Z, Childish Gambino, and Kendrick Lamar appear in the Record of the Year and Album of the Year categories.

Despite the (mostly) quality major categories, the Academy did what it does best and still find a way to screw it up. Even though black artists make music that's actually more popular than what's in the "pop" categories, they don't usually win in the big name categories like Album of the Year or Record of the Year. Little Big Town earned mentions for Best Country Song, Best Country Album (The Breaker) and Best Country Duo/Group Performance for "Better Man".

Surprisingly absent from these main categories are Kesha and Harry Styles, both of whom seemed like obvious choices.

Using the hashtag #OscarsBeSoWhite fans and celebrities alike took to Twitter to protest the fact that out of the 20 actors and actresses nominated in the lead and supporting categories for 2015 and 2016, none were non-white. Kesha's stunning comeback album was a narrative throughout the entire summer, while Styles's debut solo album marked one of the best pop albums of the year.

Kendrick Lamar- To Pimp A Butterfly
Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, Migos, Tyler, The Creator and Rapsody Nominated for Best Rap Album at 2018 Grammy Awards

For the first time in almost two decades, the Grammy Awards do not include any white men in its Album of the Year category.

On Tuesday, Jay-Z collected eight nods, Kendrick Lamar seven and producer (and former Chicagoan) No I.D. got five, continuing a yearslong pattern of hip-hop and R&B domination of the nominations. Her hit song, "Bodak Yellow", earned nominations for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance.

Yet the only hip-hop artists to win album of the year in the Grammys' 59 previous years were OutKast (in 2004) and Lauryn Hill (1999), an embarrassingly small representation in a 40-year span that has produced culture-shifting artists such as Lamar, West and countless others.

If you noticed a distinct lack of Taylor Swift on this year's list of nominees, there's actually a reason for that.
