A suicide bomber struck the main police academy in Somalia capital Mogadishu on Thursday.

The bomber walked into the police academy undetected and joined a long line of officers in the rehearsal parade before he detonated the explosives under his sportswear.

"... a suicide bomber wearing a fake Somali police uniform came out of a nearby kiosk and blew himself up in between the police officers who were busy taking their breakfast", announced acting Police Commissioner Muqtar Afrah.

The bomber, with explosives strapped around his waist and torso, infiltrated Gen. Kahiye Police Academy and targeted officers rehearsing for Somalia's Police Day celebrations scheduled for December 20, Capt. Mohamed Hussein said. The insurgents said they killed 27 police officers.

Aamin Ambulance Director Abdukadir Abdirahman told Xinhua they had ferried 13 bodies to the city's Medina Hospital. "There are casualties, and many injuries". Later on Thursday, police attended the funerals of some of their colleagues killed in the attack.

The Somalia-based al-Shabab extremist group quickly claimed responsibility for the attack.

The airstrike, conducted southwest of Mogadishu, was done in coordination with the Somali government and was against "an al-Shabaab vehicle-borne improvised explosive device", according to the command.

At least 15 other people were reported to be wounded. In October, a huge truck bombing blamed on the Shabaab killed as many as 512 people, levelling buildings in the capital's busy Kilometre 5 neighbourhood.
