As the temperatures drop, so do blood donations.

A part-time student at the University of Alberta, Valdez said he walked by the clinic at 8249 114th St. and saw a sign urging people to donate blood.

Mike Stredder, director of blood donation at NHS Blood and Transplant, said: "It's New Year and like many of us, you may be thinking about the year ahead and some changes you'd like to make to your life".

Following this a staff member will go over your questionnaire with you to confirm your answers and give your finger a quick prick to check your hemoglobin levels and test your blood pressure.

Blood donors are urgently needed, says Canadian Blood Services (CBS).

"They are really making a difference so we're very grateful to them".

Platelets are also collected but this poses a hard challenge because such donations only have a shelf life of seven days, notes the Canadian Blood Services.

Blood donors are needed to fill about 370 appointments in Central Alberta between now and January 6 to help fill the need for donations this holiday season.

After their initial plea for help, there was an increase in donations across the country, but there are still some 18,000 open donor appointments to fill and the Lethbridge clinic still has 159 openings for next week.

"The holiday period always presents challenges for us as we work to ensure we have enough blood and blood products to meet patients' needs", Canadian Blood Services stated in a press release. Donors with O-negative blood are part of a select group whose donations are compatible with everyone.
