In spite of this, the movie is still projected to outshine the likes of The Avengers when all is said and done.

By Tuesday's end, the film will have surpassed $800 million worldwide.

Don't bet on Star Wars fatigue just yet. The Phantom Menace sits on $1.027 billion, followed by Rogue One: A Star Wars Story on $1.051 billion and Star Wars: The Force Awakens on $2.059 billion.

The eighth instalment of the blockbuster space saga topped the charts in North America for a second week, according to box office tracker Exhibitor Relations, pulling in US$99 million (S$133 million) from Friday through Monday to rack up total earnings of US$395.6 million since it opened last weekend. The film, distributed by Walt Disney Co., has now grossed over $745 million since its December 15 release, already enough to make it the 10th-highest grossing film of the year, but the film's domestic take still puts it 30% behind its predecessor, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens", which was released in 2015, according to Box Office Pro data.

Box-office observers note that The Last Jedi got dinged in terms of its weekend-over-weekend drop by Christmas Eve falling on a Sunday this year, a day when traffic always slows. Should it reach that point, then it will be the fifth-highest-grossing movie ever, behind Jurassic World ($1.67 billion), Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($2.07 billion), Titanic ($2.19 billion), and Avatar ($2.79 billion).

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is finally here and critics and fans are clamoring for more.

Sacrificing potential merchandising for character development is an impressive and (for the series) unconventional move that reflects some of the other decisions Johnson made in his critically-loved, yet controversially-received Star Wars entry. Some questions from The Force Awakens were finally answered and new questions were set up for future movies to answer.

The scene is one that Star Wars VFX supervisor Ben Morris called the first of its kind in the franchise.
