Trump Jr. Invokes Attorney-Client Privilege with His Father

"The attorney-client privilege only protects confidential communications between a lawyer and a client to facilitate the provision of legal services". Trump Jr. spoke with his father shortly after the news about the meeting broke in July 2017, but declined to share details of their discussion with lawmakers.

The emails from the publicist, Rob Goldstone, were discovered by congressional investigators and raised at Wednesday's classified hearing with Trump Jr., who said he could not recall the interactions, several sources said.

Obviously, the privilege would not apply if Trump Jr. had a conversation with his father or with his father and other non-attorney parties.

That source also said Goldstone mentioned the idea at the end of the Trump Tower meeting, as everyone was leaving, though Goldstone continued to push this proposal in emails in the weeks following. But the bottom line is that if what this lawyer is telling us today is true, there is absolutely no question left that the Trump campaign colluded with Russian Federation.

Trump Jr. "acknowledged having discussed the June 9 meeting and the emails that went into establishing that meeting after those emails became public", Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), the top Democrat on the intelligence committee, told reporters after Trump Jr.'s interview with the panel.

Authorities said families of the victims have been notified but few details on the incident or motive were immediately known. The school is located in the Four Corners region and is near the Navajo Nation , about 180 miles north of Albuquerque.

The meeting, with the Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya, is one prong of the probe into possible collusion between Moscow and the Trump campain. None of the emails CNN reported on Thursday were sent to Trump Jr. directly, but were instead missives sent by Goldstone to Dan Scavino, then a top aide to the Trump campaign and now the White House's social media director, as well as Ike Kaveladze, a Russian who was present at the meeting. Huckabee Sanders, Donald Trump himself, Kellyanne Conway, all of them have insisted that he, Trump Jr., did not meet with these people to get dirt on Hillary Clinton, but that is not one, what his own email said, and two, what the actual person that he met with had to say.

The admission by his Trump's eldest son raises the question of how closely the Trumps coordinated on their response to the bombshell revelations and could bolster the case that President Trump participated in an effort to craft a false public explanation for the Trump Tower meeting.

As Schiff noted in his statement, it is critical to know exactly what Donald Trump knows about his son's secret meeting with the Russians during the campaign, and what they talked about after it took place. Additionally, exactly what role did Trump play in drafting the statement that was initially released earlier this year that claimed, incorrectly, that the intent of the meeting had been to discuss the adoption of Russian orphans by American couples and the restrictions that had been placed on that program in the wake of the Russian takeover of Crimea? As a general rule, of course, the privilege means that conversations between a client and his or her attorney are privileged and can not be revealed in Court or in any other proceeding of a legal nature such as a Congressional investigation. He acknowledged discussing that matter with his father, but refused to answer questions about that discussion on the basis of attorney-client privilege.

"The general rule is that a conversation is *not* privileged if a third person is present for the conversation with an attorney and a client", Mariotti said.
