Deputy killed outside Denver, one suspect in custody

The Adams County Sheriff's Office had established a large perimeter near in Thornton to search for suspects.

The deputy, identified by the Colorado Fraternal Order of Police as Heath Gumm, 32, was transported to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead shortly after arrival. We are waiting a media briefing from the sheriff's office.

Two suspects are being sought in the second slaying of a metro-area law enforcer in 25 days, and a fundraiser for Gumm's family has already been launched. Witnesses described them as light-skinned black males or dark-skinned Hispanic males. Investigators were still searching for the suspect and a large perimeter was set up in the area.

Citing the needs of an ongoing investigation, police advised local residents to exercise caution and take precautionary measures such as staying away from windows or avoiding certain parts of the city.

Deputies had been chasing the man in an "assault in progress" call about 7 p.m. When they arrived, several people dispersed from the location.

Deputies found two women inside, 20-year-old Rosamaria Montano and 22-year-old Jasmine Elizabeth Hernandez, both with outstanding warrants for their arrest. Governor John Hickenlooper ordered all flags to to be lowered to half-staff in honor of Deputy Gumm.

A manhunt is underway after a sheriff's deputy was shot and killed in Colorado.

"We are deeply saddened to learn that the deputy has died from injuries sustained in the shooting".

One man was in custody and two suspects were on the run, an Adams County Sheriff's office spokesperson said at a late night news conference on Wednesday.
