Two youths killed in army firing in Kashmir

The statement said that an Army administrative convoy was passing through Ganowpora chowk (square) when it came under "unprovoked and intense stone pelting by a group of 100-120 stone-pelters" at around 3 pm.

A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator today said that the army action in Shopian yesterday in which two youth were killed was "need of the hour" to prevent "bloodshed and chaos" in Jammu and Kashmir.

Also raising the demand for discussion, PDP MLAs joined the opposition which drew a response from the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti who asked the Speaker to allow the discussion as all the opposition and PDP MLAs are asking for it. Mobile Internet services have been suspended in Anantnag, Kulgam, Pulwama and Shopian districts; speed has been reduced to 128kbps in rest of Kashmir.

A few days back a youth Shakir Ahmad Mir was also killed and two teenage girls were shot in their head forcing them to battle for their life at SIKIMS Soura.

"Within no time, the numbers increased to 250 people". The crowd surrounded an isolated portion of the convoy consisting of four vehicles.

State police have registered a formal complaint against the army, which is controlled by the federal government, over the incident and ordered a probe.

Meanwhile, SSP Shopian Shriram Ambarkar said they have registered an FIR against the army.

Restrictions were imposed in areas under eight police stations of Srinagar namely Nowhatta, Khanyar, Zadibal, Kralkhud, Maisuma, MR Gunj, Batmaloo and Shaheed Gunj.

The statement further added that a junior commissioned officer accompanying the convoy got hit and fell unconscious. The mob tried to lynch the individual and snatch his weapon.

"A total of seven Army men suffered injuries while extensive damage was caused to eleven vehicles".
