"He struck up a dialogue, a communication with this child simply by faking that he was another 13 or 14-year-old girl", said Demings.
The TV station spoke with the girl's mother earlier on Sunday and she said her daughter had been in communication with a person online who lives in IL.
Police also told WESH that Byrns disguised himself as a female to pull "her into a trap, so to speak".
Her parents were aware of the communication but the man claimed to be a young woman who lived in IL.
By Sunday night, Bibb deputies and Federal Bureau of Investigation agents located Johnson and her accused abductor at a hotel in west Bibb County.
"You really need to know who it is your children are communicating with and you really need to monitor their dialogues", said Demings.
Seventh-grader shoots self at OH middle school; no one else hurt
A school official told reporters the town's four elementary schools were closed and the town's high school was being evacuated. Investigators say no other students were hurt, and they don't know yet whether the shooting Tuesday morning was intentional.
The girl's parents reported her as an endangered runaway around 10 a.m. Sunday.
He called Byrns a "child sexual predator" based on the 24-year-old's behavior.
Byrns is being held at the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center and is expected to be charged.
"Her mother had given us information in reference to a particular individual she was chatting with, and that's kind of what drew us in that direction", said Sgt. Brandon Ragan with the Orange County Sheriff's Office. He convinced Johnson to leave her home to meet him.
Police are saying that Johnson is doing okay, from a physical standpoint. Sheriff Demings said he believes that Bryns is a child predator and hopes justice will prevail in this case.
"I would say she's lucky to be alive".
