Both Mega Millions and Powerball - which now has a jackpot of $40 million after a New Hampshire woman claimed $560 million earlier this year - have seen hefty grand prizes lately, largely thanks to rule changes that made it more hard to win the jackpot. The Mega Millions jackpot reached $502 million on March 28, 2018.

It's just the fourth time in Mega Millions history the jackpot has surged past $500 million. Two of those winning tickets were sold in Virginia Beach and one of those tickets was sold in Vienna.

Tickets must be purchased by 10:00 p.m. ET on Friday to be eligible for that night's 11:00 p.m. ET drawing.

Three winning tickets - from Illinois, Kansas, and Maryland - shared Mega Millions largest jackpot of $656 million in 2012. The winning numbers were 7, 25, 43, 56, 59, and the Mega Ball was 13. According to Mega Millions, each payment value is 5 percent higher than the previous one.

Mega Millions can be played in 44 states, Washington D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The lucky ticket, which matched five numbers but not the Mega Ball, was bought at Quick Chek on Route 206 in Bedminster, state lottery officials said Wednesday morning.
