Saudi crown prince lands in Egypt on first public trip

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, kicked off on Sunday his three-day trip to Egypt by holding talks with President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi. He was received by President El-Sisi at Cairo airport.

The head of Prince Mohammed's office, Bader al-Asaker, tweeted that the prince's plane was escorted by Egyptian fighter jets when it entered Egypt's airspace.

To stress the importance of peaceful coexistence and humanitarian respect for the development of a country, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is scheduled to visit Al Azhar, Cairo Opera House and the Cathedral of St.Mark in Abbasiya.

He will meet there head of the Coptic Church Tawadros II.

Hariri's brief resignation was seen as a politically orchastrated move by Saudi Arabia, with President Michel Aoun accusing the Kingdom of holding him against his well.

Saudi Arabia views Egypt as a cornerstone of regional stability, after the former army chief Sisi overthrew his Islamist predecessor Mohamed Morsi in 2013.

Egypt's top court has upheld a deal to transfer two Red Sea islands to Saudi Arabia.

"The Saudi crown prince expressed hope that the visit will add momentum to the strategic relations between the two nations and peoples and to boost bilateral cooperation in all fields", said the Egyptian spokesman.

Sisi ratified the deal past year, and Egypt's top court annulled lower court rulings for and against the treaty on the eve of the crown prince's arrival.

Before that, however, he visited Egypt four times (three times in 2015 and once in 2016) after Sisi assumed the presidency in mid-2014.

The construction of the King Salman Bridge has been described as the largest project in the world by Egyptian Transport Minister Hashim Arafat.

Egypt supports the kingdom in a war against Yemen, aimed at regaining power to Saudi ally, resigned Abd Rabbu Mansur Hadi, also, Egypt joined a trade and diplomatic boycott of Qatar a year ago.
