It's the fight that just isn't meant to be.

Bookies have been scrambling to finalize their odds for this weekend's lightweight championship bout with the announcement that Max Holloway will step in for the injured Tony Ferguson at UFC 223 (now available on Amazon Prime). Ferguson had to pull out of the fight due to an injury. The result of an MRI showed a torn lateral collateral ligament (LCL), which will require surgery, and Ferguson was not cleared to compete. Both competitors have been forced to withdraw on two occasions.

T-City revealed on Twitter that UFC president Dana White called him after the Ferguson vs. Nurmagomedov fight was scrapped and that he accepted to move up in weight to take the fight.

UFC 223 is set to take place on Saturday, April 7, 2018, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

The undefeated Dagestani fighter will face Max Holloway at UFC 223 Saturday in Brooklyn after his original opponent, Tony Ferguson, fell off the card with a freak injury. All I can say is Max is a gangster.

Ferguson, who was named as the interim lightweight champion after Conor McGregor vacated his belt, said: 'Words can't explain how hurt, frustrated, angry and in disbelief I am right now.

McGregor is the official UFC lightweight champion as it stands, after becoming a two-weight champion in his most recent MMA fight, though he is expected to lose the belt amid the culmination of the Nurmagomedov-Holloway fight. Whittaker did face Yoel Romero for the interim belt, when Michael Bisping was scheduled to defend the middleweight title last November against Georges St-Pierre. The news has robbed UFC fans of one of the most compelling UFC match-ups - for the fourth time. "That's a tough weight cut for him", White said. But the Waianae native isn't looking that far ahead just yet. "But I didn't feel like anybody else felt that way, and I wasn't sure that the women's division could survive without me".

"And whoever wins, wins the title and we'll see what happens with Conor over the next several months". Helwani reports that Calgary is the frontrunner to host a UFC event on July 28. As time went on, it became more apparent that this wasn't a prank.

White spoke to ESPN Sunday night and said McGregor wasn't considered to fill in for Ferguson.
