Gun violence walkouts planned at Wichita schools

That is the day scheduled for the "National School Walkout".

The March for our Lives, a student-led event with a flagship demonstration in Washington D.C.in March, had more than 800 locations across the world.

In Memphis, students will have 17 minutes of silence, honoring each Parkland victim.

Marion County's seven traditional public high school principals have worked with student leaders to tailor activities for their respective campuses, realizing what one campus wants is different than what another campus wants.

Students at Southmoreland High School also are working to plan additional school safety awareness events, said sophomore Olivia Robertucci, who helped plan the school's March 14 walkout. Though some Columbine students are planning a combined vigil and voter registration rally with students from Florida's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Thursday night.

Locally, most of the March walkouts took place on school campuses and were sanctioned by school officials. "The April 20 walkout as now promoted is a disruption to the school day, and a violation of the student code of conduct - which will be enforced".

On March 14, hundreds of thousands of students across the United States walked out to protest gun violence. Area organizers said that rather than risking getting in trouble for leaving school, they are encouraging students who want to participate to get parental permission to take the day off.

"He worked with us and said we could maybe do something during lunch, but we chose to organize it after school so that we can gather an audience of people who genuinely want to be there", Basilone said in a text message.

"If they decide to stay on campus and are not disruptive and re-enter the building cooperatively, that will likely be handled in the same manner as the walk out that occurred last month", Quattlebaum said.

In a news release, organizers say the rally will feature speakers who have survived gun violence. In many states it's more hard to register to vote than it is to buy a rifle.
