Barbara Bush listens to her son, President George W. Bush, as he speaks at an event on social security reform in Orlando, Fla., in March 2005.

After the service at St. Martin's Church, Barbara Bush's motorcade took a scenic route to her final resting place in College Station.

The burial will be held at her husband's presidential library at Texas A&M University, about 100 miles (161 kilometers) northwest of Houston. Barbara Bush will be buried in a gated plot near the grave of their 3-year-old daughter, Robin.

Mrs. Bush, only the second woman in USA history to have had a husband and son elected President, died Tuesday at the age of 92 at her home in Houston. Melania Trump also paid her respects and was seated next to the Obamas during the service, as George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, his wife, Laura, and the rest of the Bush family greeted attendees and gave eulogies.

Jeb Bush said his mother had "filled our lives with laughter and joy". Bush met a service member, "She would shake hands, look them straight in the eye, and [say], 'Thank you for your service'".

He said he could still feel her presence Saturday inside the nation's largest Episcopal church and she would likely have given him advice on his eulogy: "Jeb, keep it short".

Barbara Bush's granddaughters delivered readings during the service and her grandsons served as pallbearers as the casket was later wheeled out of the church.

Her son and former Governor of Florida, Jeb Bush, is among three people who eulogized Mrs.

However, it's not uncommon for sitting presidents to skip the funerals of former first ladies.

Mr Meacham, who wrote a 2015 biography on her husband, joined 1,500 people on a rainy day to honour the wife of the 41st president and the mother of the 43rd. The former 2016 presidential candidate and first lady also thanked Bush for "her many kindnesses to me and my family".

"Mrs. Trump knows how close they were and are to the Bush family", Grisham said. President Bill Clinton attended a graveside service for Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, who died in 1994.

Meacham told how Barbara Bush's hug of an HIV/AIDS patient "sent a powerful image, one of compassion, of love and of acceptance", and who she believed literacy was the "fundamental civil and human right".

Numerous women who came to pay their respects wore Barbara Bush's favorite color, blue, and strands of pearls in tribute to Mrs.

"She was smart, strong, fun and feisty", said Susan Baker, wife of George H.W. Bush's secretary of state and chief of staff.

The ceremony was attended by four former President and current leader of the American people, Donald trump has not arrived. He also spoke of her quick wit that made her so popular.

"Barbara Bush was a outstanding lady".

Baker called Barbara Bush an "amazing and attractive friend", recalling how Bush helped her settle in when she first moved to Washington, D.C. From his wheelchair, he spent about 15 minutes shaking hands with people who had come.
