Turkey grants construction license to Akkuyu NPP

Russian Federation has chose to accelerate the supplies of S-400 surface-to-air missile systems to Turkey, President Vladimir Putin said after negotiations with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara.

In December, they finalized a deal for Turkey to purchase Russia's long-range S-400 missile defense system, raising eyebrows among some of Turkey's fellow North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members.

According to Russian press reports, Turkey has also been hugely interested in a technology transfer and even joint production of the S-400s with Russia, a prospect that has been resisted by some in the Moscow security services.

In January 2018 Turkey launches an operation inside Syria against the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) militia, which it considers a "terrorist" group despite its work with Washington against IS.

This will be the first such object to be built in Turkey.

Putin and Erdogan have met several times in the past year and regularly speak on the phone.

The Akkuy nuclear power plant in Mersin County is being built together with the Russian company Rosatom and will have four power units with a capacity of 1200 megawatts.

Turkey and Russian Federation have put aside their traditional rivalries and differences on regional issues to forge strong economic ties. The three countries are sponsoring a series of negotiations to end the seven-year-long war.

In late June 2016 the Kremlin says Erdogan has apologised for the jet downing in a message to Putin, in which he calls for a return to friendlier ties.

Russian Federation and Iran have given crucial military and diplomatic backing to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government throughout the war, which began with a government crackdown on protesters and has killed hundreds of thousands of people.
