Vance had been under investigation by Schneiderman for possibly mishandling sex abuse complaints against movie mogul Harvey Weinstein.

The group was gathered by then-New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, who months earlier announced an inquiry into whether ExxonMobil had misled investors about climate change.

Schneiderman had investigated a number of Trump business entities - including Trump University - and it's hard to know if the next attorney general will continue watch-dogging the president's businesses so methodically.

Schneiderman's announcement late Monday came hours after The New Yorker published the accounts of four women, who accused the Democrat of physical violence.

"No-one is above the law, including New York's top legal officer", he said. "I thought it was a very powerful and damning statement of facts".

In announcing his resignation, Schneiderman he would step down at the end of business Tuesday.

Cuomo said the special prosecutor will work with the other district attorneys, including the district attorney in Suffolk County on Long Island, where one of the women detailed alleged abuse by Schneiderman after a party in the Hamptons.

NY legislators will interview candidates for state attorney general next week in Albany, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie announced Wednesday. Schneiderman said he "strongly contested" the allegations, attributing his actions to "role-playing".

Schneiderman also issued a separate statement on Twitter, directly addressing the claims of violence directed at women he was intimately involved with. "I have never engaged in nonconsensual sex, which is a line I would not cross", he said in the New Yorker report released hours before he resigned.

Former New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman responded to allegations of physical abuse against him by saying he engaged in consensual "role-playing" and did not assault anyone, but one of the reporters who broke the story Monday night says he doesn't buy that defense.

"You'd think that Cy would welcome it. being relieved of the implication that somehow his decision, no matter how fair and balanced, was going to be attacked as retribution by the Schneiderman supporters", Vacco said.

A third woman said that when she rebuffed Mr. Schneiderman, "he slapped her across the face with such force that it left a mark that lingered the next day..."

Cuomo appointed Nassau District Attorney Madeline Singas as a special prosecutor on Tuesday to investigate the abuse allegations.

A former member of the Women's Caucus, New York City Public Advocate Letitia James, is considered to be a leading candidate to replace Schneiderman. "I kicked. In every fibre, I felt I was being beaten by a man", she said, also claiming the then-attorney general accused her of scratching him and told her: "You know, hitting an officer of the law is a felony".

"This process would allow us the opportunity to recommend or select a well-qualified replacement, so that public uncertainty regarding who fills this important office will be resolved as soon as reasonably practical", Heastie wrote in a letter to legislative leaders.
