Malaysia's Anwar released from custody

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad says more wrongdoing occurred at 1MDB than was publicly known as he speeds efforts to reopen an investigation into the state fund and actions of his predecessor, Bloomberg reports. As such, he will not be rushing back into politics and will support the new government as a regular citizen instead. "But I plan to visit him on Saturday, and tell him I look forward to working with him again for mutual benefit", he said during the Singapore parliament session today.

But voters resoundingly rejected the government of scandal-tainted Najib Razak and voted in an opposition alliance, triggering a series of dizzying developments - with Anwar's release perhaps the most dramatic yet. The finance ministry said on Wednesday that the goods-and-services tax, imposed in 2015, would be revised to 0 per cent from 6 per cent, effective June 1.

Mahathir has said he expects to run the government for one to two years, but has signaled that the reins would be turned over to Anwar eventually.

The raid came on the day that former Malaysian deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim was finally released from jail, where he has been serving a second sentence for sodomy.

Anwar was sentenced to five years in prison in February 2015 after the Federal Court retained a conviction for sodomy.

Meanwhile, Nurul Izzah said she was grateful for the release of her father, who is also the PKR de facto leader, and described that justice was done through the release.

The relationship between Anwar and Mahathir has been marked by decades of bitterness and public attacks, stemming from Mahathir's decision during a prior stint in power to sack Anwar as his deputy amid a dispute on how best to respond to the Asian financial crisis.
