The 37-year-old Australian did just that in a dominant performance for Team Penske.

Power narrowly pulled ahead of leaders Stefan Wilson and Jack Harvey, both of whom were forced to stop with five laps left to refuel.

"That guy was sitting here this morning before I walked in, sitting in his firesuit next to his engineer ready to go, about 6:30 this morning", Cindric said. She had six top-10 finishes in her previous seven Indianapolis starts but ran outside the top 10 for most of Sunday's race after starting seventh. "It's just wonderful." Power extended team owner Roger Penske's record of 17 wins in the "Greatest Spectacle in Racing", and it completed a sweep of May in Indianapolis for him. Power actually swept the month of May at Indy after winning on the road course two weeks ago and his 34 wins tied him with Al Unser Jr. for eighth on IndyCar's all-time list.

Power is considered by many to be the best IndyCar driver now competing.

"I just can't believe it", he said after the race.

It's always special to be here at Indy, but I've been with him on four Sunday nights after the race where he's disappointed and we have had a deep-and-meaningful for hours. "I don't know if we have a tampering rule in IndyCar, but congrats Will".

With hot weather creating a slick, 2 ½-mile oval, new cars with less downforce proved to be handful. Defending race victor Takuma Sato was also knocked out when he ran into the back of a slower auto.

Aaron Rodgers Gave Danica Patrick a Good Luck Hug Before Final Indianapolis 500 Race

Danica Patrick confirmed in February that she would end her racing career after the 102nd running of the Indianapolis 500.

Patrick, 36, had those same thoughts as she returned to Indianapolis after her 2005 debut at the track that sparked her career. Patrick's career ended with a crash in Turn 2. Watch the terrifying moment she lost control of her auto! Power managed to hold off the field down the stretch to claim the victory.

Patrick was running 17th at the time of her crash and it came just laps after a similar crash by EdJones in the same spot.

Still, she is respected and, in some cases, revered at Indianapolis, where fans remember her leading the 2009 race before finishing third. They just didn't come on race day.

"They said they looked back at the data and it was kind of a little lift in the middle, a little bit of understeer and then back to it and it just swung".

Among other drivers who exited due to mishaps were three-time victor Helio Castroneves (lap 147) and 2013 victor Tony Kanaan (188).

France's Sebastian Bourdais, back at Indy a year after he suffered hip and pelvic injuries in qualifying last year, three-time victor Helio Castroneves of Brazil and 2013 victor Tony Kanaan of Brazil also failed to make it to the finish. "But we had some good moments".

Stovall said lava spatter from one of the vents was forming a wall that was helping protect a nearby geothermal plant. Ten wells at Puna Geothermal were "quenched", which cools them with cold water, and the last was plugged with mud.
