Iran plans to strike Israel from positions in Syria and Lebanon, a defence analyst has warned, as hostilities between the two countries threaten to spark World War 3.

He said that it was a mistake to think that Thursday morning's attacks on the Iranian bases had completely solved the problem, but that the army was ready for anything and would continue to do whatever necessary to ensure Israel is secure. Israel said Iranian Quds Forces deployed inside Syria fired about 20 rockets at IDF positions.

In strikes near the capital on Wednesday, the Observatory said at least 15 were killed, including eight Iranians.

Guterres' comments came as a calm night followed intense attacks on parts of Syria by Israel.

The Golan Heights are Syrian territory occupied by Israel in 1967 and annexed in 1981.

Iran has advisers and experts and has backed tens of thousands of militiamen who are fighting alongside Assad's forces in the civil war.

"Get rid of the Iranians and maybe it will be possible to have a different kind of life", Lieberman added.

The escalation between Israel and Iran has raised fears the region may be sliding into an unprecedented direct confrontation between the two archenemies.

It has also targeted what it says are arms deliveries to Hezbollah in Syria.

Tehran, meanwhile, is under pressure from the USA and Western allies to negotiate a new deal, one that goes beyond restricting the nuclear program to curb Iran's military power in the region.

Thousands of Iranians protested Friday across the country.

"The holy system of the Islamic Republic will step up its missile capabilities day by day so that Israel, this occupying regime, will become sleepless and the nightmare will constantly haunt it that if it does anything foolish, we will raze Tel Aviv and Haifa to the ground", he said, according to state television. It also came just hours after President Donald Trump announced the withdrawal of the USA from the Iran nuclear deal. The worshippers chanted: "Death to America", and "Death to Israel".

In a lengthy statement Friday, the Iranian government warned that it would take "whatever reciprocal measures it deems expedient" if it is not fully compensated for the USA withdrawal from the nuclear agreement as provided for in the accord. Thursday's attack was a "blatant violation of Syria's sovereignty", Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi was quoted as saying Friday.

In the latest victory for Assad, Syrian police prepared Friday to take control of three suburbs of the capital Damascus previously controlled by the rebels.

According to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, at least 11 Iranians were among 27 killed in the Israeli retaliatory strikes.
