A Maryland man shot and killed three people after he went chasing after his wife who ran from their home in terror after her husband held her captive there for the preceding weekend.

Police responded to a home in 22000 block of Brown Farm Way east of Sunshine for a domestic disturbance. Shortly after police officers eventually broke down the door and entered the home, the suspect fatally shot himself.

Police say negotiators spoke with him via phone for a "couple of hours". Residents are also being told to shelter in place. "Our negotiators have been speaking with him via phone".

The tactical team was searching the rest of the house because, during the negotiations, police learned that there could be explosives and several guns inside the house, Manger said.

The move came after the U.S. and China held high-stakes trade talks in Beijing aimed at forestalling a looming conflict between the world's two largest economies.

Authorities say the gunman, in some sort of dispute, followed his wife from their house to the house where the murder-suicide happened. He asked the negotiator, 'Did they just break in to the front door?' and then hung up the phone. "I'm trying to figure out right now if there's another alternative route, I can only think of one but if they don't allow that you know essentially people in the area are going to be stuck for an indefinite amount of time", Azad said. "At that point, officers who were outside the home heard a single gunshot", Manger said.

The number of deaths was not known, but police reported "multiple fatalities".

Police did not elaborate Monday night on why Mr. Snyder had been holding his wife hostage or whether he had some other specific grudge against the family across the street.

"We've had contact with this suspect in the past over a number of different issues", Manger said.
