Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday, June 5, said that US President Donald Trump shouldn't pardon himself and dismissed the possibility of a legal question coming up ever.
A day earlier, Trump's personal attorney Rudy Giuliani had told Sunday talk shows that the president does has the power to pardon himself, but that would be politically very tough. "And he has no need to do it, he's done nothing wrong".
On Monday, the president weighed in on the pardon discussion, declaring on Twitter that he has the "absolute right to PARDON myself".
It's the latest salvo from Trump in his bid to discredit the ongoing probe by special counsel Robert Mueller. "Despite that, we play the game because I, unlike the Democrats, have done nothing wrong!"
He made it clear Trump's legal team would combat any effort to force the president to testify in front of a grand jury.
Giuliani is leading the defense of Trump in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into whether Trump associates coordinated with Russian Federation during the 2016 presidential election, and whether Trump took steps to shut down that investigation through actions, including the firing of FBI Director James Comey.
In light of his recent pardoning spree, several of the President's outside friends and allies have begun advocating for people they believe should also be forgiven.
Giuliani has been vocal and aggressive in his defense of Trump on cable news airwaves since Trump appointed him in April as part of his legal defense team. "The president has not done anything wrong", she said. "They are trying to invent theories of obstruction of justice", Giuliani told a business conference in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv.
The White House has started paperwork to pardon at least 30 people, according to two sources.
"President Trump is not above the law", Smith said.
The letter is dated January 29 and addressed to Mueller from John Dowd, a Trump lawyer who has since resigned from the legal team.

Mr Modi mentioned that the per-capita plastic consumption in India is much lower than any part of the developed world. The ministry hosts an event to mark World Environment Day every June 5.
Most experts say his claims of the right to self-pardon, and accusation that the Mueller investigation is unconstitutional, lack strong legal foundation.
Giuliani said he wants to see documents related to an Federal Bureau of Investigation informant and an unredacted copy of a memo outlining the full scope of the special counsel's mandate, the former NY mayor said in a telephone interview from Israel.
A Virginia judge overseeing the trial of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort ordered Mueller's team to turn over the complete three-page memo from August outlining the specific crimes Mueller is authorized to investigate.
Giuliani said during an appearance on CNN that "it was a mistake" and rejected the idea that it was a lie.
Ryan also rejected Trump's claim that FBI investigators illegally placed an informant inside his campaign. The investigation was opened after the hacking of Democratic emails that intelligence officials later formally attributed to Russian Federation. "I'm very, very disappointed in Comey", Giuliani said.
"I mean, we're leaning toward not", Mr Giuliani told ABC.
"It seems like it would be a completely wrong assumption".
Meantime, Giuliani has said before that the president's lawyers oppose Trump sitting down for an interview with Mueller.
Mr Trump later added that the "appointment of the Special Councel is totally UNCONSTITUTIONAL!"
He continued: "I think that what Rudy has done is a shame and a disgrace as a former USA attorney, and as a former justice official, he knows better, and it's an outright lie". And they're going around starting all these new investigations.
