For Democrats, who already control California as a virtual one-party state, there's no upside, while Republicans have little to lose after watching their registration numbers fall in May behind those of voters with no party preference. On Tuesday, elections officials said a sample of the signatures projects more than 402,468 of them are valid - more than enough to be included on a November ballot that could see as many as 16 propositions by the deadline for certification later this month.

"Three states will get us better infrastructure, better education and lower taxes", Tim Draper, the billionaire Silicon Valley venture capitalist who sponsored the "Cal 3" ballot measure, told the Times previous year. Though California's prisoners come from all over the state, more than half are now held in what would become Southern California.

If a majority of California voters that cast ballots agree to divide the state into three, the plan would need approval from both houses of the California Legislation. Now Californians are set to vote on the "Division of California into Three States" initiative in November. For a variety of reasons, that seemed to be way too many new states for most people.

Californians have long debated whether they were better as a whole or in parts. He says dividing state parks and the education system would be costly and a logistical nightmare.

Draper, who made his fortune investing in startup companies, is proposing that the state of 40 million people be split into three entities with roughly the same populations.

According to the proposal backed by billionaire venture capitalist Tim Draper, the state would be cut into Northern California, California, and Southern California.

"You have Northern California's marijuana growers, you have the Bay Area and Los Angeles for the consumers - in-between, we're dead", he said. "I think that a proposal such as Mr. Draper's may constitute an attempt to create a "revision" to rather than an "amendment" of California's Constitution, which would require a more involved process than the simple gathering of signatures and placement on the ballot Mr. Draper is pursuing", Amar said in a blog post last August. The Central Coast including Los Angeles would be the state of California.

Will there soon be three Californias? "Californians deserve a better future".

In 2016, an effort called Calexit sought to separate California from the US. California is broken. We must split this state up if any of us has a hope of surviving the debt crisis California has got us into but if its another form of tyranny for us, then no we are not in favor of it. But the Russia-based leader of that campaign backed off.
