A BMW sits idle after reports of a shooting in Deerfield Beach involving Broward rapper XXXTentacion on Monday, June 18, 2018.

Born Jahseh Onfroy, XXXTentacion was both one of the most popular new rappers to emerge in years, and also a source of consistent controversy over credible claims from an ex-girlfriend that he repeatedly physically abused her while the two were dating.

Newsweek reached out to the Broward County Sheriff's Office for comment but had not yet heard back.

The rising star was later pronounced dead.

While friends and loved ones organize the candlelight vigil, fans continue to pay their respects at his memorial, where a woman was seen drawing XXXTentatcion's face with chalk.

The Daily Mail reports the rap star bought the Parkland home for $1.4 million last November and renovations were almost complete. XXX won the fan vote to make the cover. They said they admired XXXTentacion because he was a local kid who rose from rough circumstances and was making a positive contribution.
