Now, many countries are reluctant to go along with Washington's wishes, especially because Iran had been fully complying with the terms of the 2015 nuclear accord that lifted sanctions.

But Iran's foreign minister dismissed the alleged plot as a "false flag ploy" created to overshadow Rouhani's tour.

The top diplomats of Britain, China, France, Germany and Russian Federation will join Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in the Austrian capital, Iran's official IRNA news agency reported, for their first talks together on the deal since Washington pulled out earlier this year. It said he will meet with the foreign ministers of Britain, China, France, Russia and Germany.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Tuesday suggested Iran could halt regional exports. "They have talked without thinking carefully", Rouhani said.

Under the agreement, Iran promised to limit its uranium enrichment activities so that it could not create enough fuel for nuclear weapons. Last year, their two-way trade jumped 21 per cent from a year earlier to reach US$37.3 billion, while more than 200,000 trips were made between the two countries.

US President Donald Trump unilaterally pulled out of the agreement almost two months ago, to the ire of the other signatories - China, France, Germany, Britain and Russian Federation - which along with the European Union have continued to back the accord.

The other parties to the agreement say they remain committed to the deal so long as Iran is honoring it.

"Trump's demand that Iranian oil should not be bought, and (his) pressures on European firms at a time when Nigeria and Libya are in crisis, when Venezuela's oil exports have fallen due to US sanctions, when Saudi's domestic consumption has increased in summer, is nothing but self harm. The United States will never be able to cut Iran's oil revenues". He added that USA officials are working to contain any problems that may affect the global energy market.

They said India is expecting the Trump administration to get in touch with it over the issue of imposition of USA sanctions on Iran, adding the government will be able to formulate a strategy on oil import from that country following the talks.

"Normal countries don't terrorize other nations...and impoverish their own people", Hook said.

The Iranian leader travelled to Europe in an effort to secure support for its worldwide trade that would shield its economy in the aftermath of the U.S. decision to withdraw from the 2015 agreement. Iran has asked the European countries to come up with a new economic package to offset the US sanctions and preserve the accord.

These measures will include targeting Iran's automobile industry, trade and some metals, including gold.

The sources said there was no doubt that the USA was going to put pressure on India and other countries which import oil from Iran, noting, "the question is what do we see as a national interest and how do we explain our case to the US". US officials also warned that other countries would face sanctions unless they stopped doing business with Iran. George Grow was the editor. Susan Shand adapted it for Learning English.
