An iconic American entertainment business is down to just one location. At one time in the recent past there were four independently owned and operated Blockbuster franchises. The lone remaining store is in Bend, Oregon.
Blockbuster was the king of movie and video game rentals in 1990s. They will be selling off their inventory and anything in the store that isn't nailed down. That lucky honor goes to a store in Bend, Oregon.
"We regret to inform our customers that Blockbuster Video will be closing both the College and Debarr stores starting July 16th", read a note from Blockbuster Alaska District Manager Kelli Vey and General Manager Kevin Daymude. They employed roughly 84,000 individuals worldwide.
Heat meet with Carmelo Anthony, report says
Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey announced today that the team has re-signed free agent guard/forward Gerald Green . In recent days it was rumored that the Miami Heat were interested in pursuing former All-Star Carmelo Anthony this offseason.
The fate of Russell Crowe's jockstrap, however, is thus far uncertain. There, they built a shrine to the actor with such props as a hood from Robin Hood and a Vest from Les Miserables. On Tuesday, the DVDs and videos at the store will be up for grabs in a liquidation firesale.
The company filed for bankruptcy protection in 2010 and parent firm Dish Network started closing United States stores in 2013. Most of the USA stores closed shop soon after that.
But even with the extra business and excitement, the Alaska stores were unable to survive a planned lease hike.
Alaska's Wasilla, North Pole and Soldotna stores, along with another one in Anchorage, have all closed shop for good this year, the Anchorage Daily News reported. "But it's been going on for so long that the shock has worn off, frankly", said Payne, who is based in Austin. Slowly but surely, Blockbuster began to fade away like Thanos performed the "Snap" on all of the store's locations. Streaming took hold, and people realized they could just beam movies right into their damn TVs instead of putting on some sweatpants and driving to an actual store. Sales and rentals have rapidly been declining. While the stores could remain profitable for a few more years, this closing has to happen at some point.
